Prescriptions for eczema

Eczema is a common skin condition that causes inflamed, itchy rashes. There are several herbal extracts and plant oils that have been used traditionally and shown promising results for soothing eczema flares and symptoms. Goldenrod extract made from the leaves of the Solidago plant is considered antiseptic and can help prevent the spread of infection through eczema lesions. Goldenseal extract from the Hydrastis canadensis root is also effective for treating eczema, itching, and wounds. Balm of Gilead extract from the Commiphora tree helps in the treatment of eczema and dry skin conditions.

Other soothing options include balm mint extract from Melissa officinalis, which has calming and anti-bacterial properties beneficial for acne-prone and sensitive skin affected by eczema. Marshmallow extract from Althea officinalis is emollient and can relieve itching and irritation. Primula extract from Primula officinalis and Primula vulagris, traditionally used as an anti-itching remedy, is also useful for dry skin preparations. Horseradish extract contains ascorbic acid and has antiseptic and skin-clearing effects helpful against eczema.

Emollient plant oils like marula seed oil from Sclerocarya birrea and jojoba oil can also help moisturize inflamed eczema skin. Aloe vera gel has anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties that may provide relief from eczema symptoms. Oatmeal extracts are soothing and can help relieve itching. Applying a compress with diluted chamomile tea, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, may offer temporary comfort to eczema patches as well. Always perform a patch test before using any new product on eczema-prone skin.
