How to grow avocados at home

Avocados are easy to grow and care for at home, as they do not require much effort and live for many years. Below we will present the most important information about growing avocado seeds, which is the best way to grow them at home, noting that fruiting avocados at home requires a long time that may reach  Up to 10 years, which is why the main goal of growing it at home is to use it as an ornamental plant.[1][2]

 Avocado cultivation requirements

It is important to know the requirements for growing and caring for avocados before planting them, which are as follows: [1] [2]

Light: Avocados should be grown under direct sunlight daily, and when planting avocado seeds at home, it is recommended to place them next to a window overlooking abundant amounts of sunlight, until the roots begin to grow.

Temperatures: Avocados need a warm climate with temperatures ranging from approximately 15.6 to 29.4 degrees Celsius.

Soil: Avocado growth requires fertile, well-drained soil. It also prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6-6.5, and free of salts.

Irrigation: The avocado's need for water can be determined by measuring the soil moisture by hand, so that it is neither completely dry nor too wet.

Fertilization: It is recommended to fertilize avocados approximately every 3 months when growing them at home, using liquid fertilizer.

Pruning: You can start pruning avocado when it reaches approximately 30.50 cm in length, by cutting its branches to approximately 15 cm, with the aim of supporting its growth.

Controlling diseases and pests: The problem of yellowing leaves and rotting is one of the most common avocado diseases, which is mostly caused by excessive moisture, and this can be treated by providing adequate ventilation for the avocado plant and allowing the soil to dry for about two days.

Steps to grow avocados at home

Some people may prefer to plant the avocado seed directly in the soil, as preparing it in advance may help it germinate faster. The avocado seed can be prepared before planting it through the following steps: [3] [4] [5]

Gently remove the avocado seed from the fruit so as not to damage it.

Wash the seed from the remaining avocado pulp, and scrub it gently by hand using only warm water.

Place the avocado seed in a cup filled with water, then submerge only the lower part (2.5 cm) of the avocado seed with water. This can be done by inserting small wooden sticks into the seed, and hanging the seed on the cup.

Place the avocado seed in a place exposed to sunlight, and change the water in the cup every day or two, to avoid rotting. The amount of water in the cup must also be increased if it does not submerge the lower part of the seed, until you notice the roots of the avocado seed beginning to grow, which will often begin to appear within  3-4 weeks.

After the roots, shoots, and leaves of the avocado seed grow, remove the wooden sticks from the seed, then plant them in the soil, so that their roots are completely immersed in the soil, while maintaining moderate moisture in the avocado soil.
